What is a domain name?
Just like a phone number is unique so is the identity of every computer on the Internet. Every time you connect your ISP assigns you an Internet Protocol or IP address such as 195.166.51.xxx that identifies your computer on the Net. A Domain Name extends this by converting these numbers into something more meaningful such as just-the-name.co.uk and is organised within something called the Domain Name System (DNS) which converts and recognises these names and appropriate IP numbers to make the contact between one computer and another on the Net.
By registering your domain name, this allows you to become more personalised on the Net, with a memorable website and email addresses. What's more, because only one domain name with a particular extension can exist on the Internet, thousands of people are securing their names right now to ensure that they get the name they want. So if you really are after a name, get in there fast, as they are certainly going like 'hot cakes' - and that's no overstatement.
Each country has its own extension they are allowed to assign to names such as .co.uk, .us, .se, .fr and so on, and there are also International domain names such as .com, net, etc. Each country therefore has its own central registry where all the domain names for that country are registered. In the UK this central registry is called Nominet. For international domains, there are a number of companies who can register the domains, but the central database is held by one company, InterNic.
How does the pricing system work?
Payment is as follows:
- You can see our domain prices here
- Domain life is 2 years for .uk and centralnic domains, and up to 10 years for .com and other top level domains
- We can only accept payment online, by credit (or debit) card
- Renewal costs are the same as for new registration
- Once your domain has been registered for 60 days, you are not tied into our service in any way - you can move your domain with no charge for transfering
- If you move your domain name, the registration costs will be covered until your Just The Name service would have expired
- We can't offer any refund on payment if you move your domain, irrespective of when you do this
What are the rules governing domain name registration?
Depending on the extension you choose will determine the rules governing that domain name and for full details you should click on the following links to the information provided by the appropriate Central Registries:
- OpenSRS Terms and Conditions and ICANN Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy (for all .com, .net and .org names)
- Nominet Terms and Condtions (for all .co.uk, .org.uk and .ltd.uk names)
As a general rule you should ensure that the name you are looking to register does not infringe any existing copyrights or trade marks. You should use only letters, numbers and hyphens in your choice of name and keep the total number of characters used to within 63 characters including the extension such as .co.uk and .com. You should refer to the information provided by the registries for full details.
Who owns the name?
At all times you are the legal registrant of the domain name and we simply register and hold the name on your behalf. So long as you continue to pay the renewal fees when due for the domain name you can continue to use it indefinitely.
If you are registering the name on behalf of someone else we recommend that you make them the legal registrant as it can otherwise cause problems if you do not.
If you are registering names for sale at a later time you can do this but we advise that you read the appropriate registry's terms and conditions for full details.
Why are your prices cheaper than those of many other companies?
Why not? We can afford for them to be low so you benefit. If it sounds too good just register a name and experience our service for yourself - at these low rates what have you got to lose?
How long does it take to process my order?
The fastest registration we have performed has been about 45 secs. However we do suggest that you allow up to 24hrs as it may take this long for all the global DNS servers to start noticing your new domain name on our DNS. In some instances this may take up to 7 working days if there are delays or problems at the Registries.
What can I do with my domain name?
With our mail and web forwarding, you can start using your domain as soon as its registered.
If you need webhosting, try our sister company - Pay As You Host.
Can I move my domain name, and at what cost?
Yes, and nothing.
The whole basis for our service at JTN is to provide you the control over the domain name and you have the choice to either leave it held by us on our DNS servers or we can move it for you to any ISP or hosting company of your choice - at no extra charge, at any time.
Why don't you host websites?
At Just The Name we want you to really feel in control over the names you register with us and don't tie you down to any web hosting plans. What's more by offering the kind of service we do ensures that we concentrate on providing you the fastest and most cost-effective route to domain name registration. However, if you want your site to appear to be hosted by us, you can use our URL Masking, which will completely hide your real URL.
How does your URL Masking work?
You may have used other registration companies similar to us, who provide URL masking. However, most of these companies will simply place your forwarded address in a frameset on their own server. This means that one or all of the following will happen:
- You will have an advertising banner, inserted by the forwarding company, visible along side your site at all times
- You will have a white bar along the edge of your site
- The URL in the browser window will never change, even if a user clicks on a link - it will always show your main address
- Search engines will never be able to index the site under your good address - only the real address
- Anyone using a browser which does not support frames will either see no site at all, or will have to click on a link to see your site, at which point the URL masking will not work anyway!
However, our URL masking works in a slightly different way. With our masking, you will gain the following benefits:
- There is absolutely no advertising at any point inserted by us
- There will be no white bar, or any frameset around your site
- If someone clicks on a link to another page within your site, the URL in the browser window will change to that filename, but the domain name will remain the same!
- You can list your site on search engines via your domain with us
- Anyone using a browser which does not support frames will still see your site exactly as they would if they went directly there, and the URL masking will still function
The effect of this is that the URL masking is completely transparent. There will be no indication of any kind that the site is not hosted on our servers. As far as we know, we are the only company currently who offers this kind of URL masking without actually hosting the site. However, we would love to hear of any other company who offers a similar service. If you know of any company at all who can offer transparent URL masking such as this, please do email us.
Also, with all URL masking, full Analog-generated logs are now available from your control panel. These logs are updated weekly, are accessible at any time, and include hit-graphs, and statistics by domain suffix, referrer, etc.
If you would like to see an example of our URL masking, please click here. The actual site is here.
If you decide you would like URL masking, this is done on a per-domain basis. You should register your domains as normal, and once you have confirmation of the domains, you can enable URL masking in the Just The Name Control Panel, and pay at the same time.
Is there anything I should be aware of with regard URL masking?
As a general rule, you should only use URL masking if you are forwarding to just a domain name or a domain name followed by a directory (i.e. not an actual filename). Please read on for more details.
This really depends on the layout of your website. There are two points to bear in mind when deciding whether or not to use our URL masking.
The first point is that if you do have URL masking, you cannot link to any pages or images which are above the URL you have given. For example:
If your real site is http://www.ispdomain.suffix/mywebsite/html/, you can point URL masking to this URL. You will be able to access see any files in that directory, and also any sub-directories of the URL. However, you would not be able to access any files above that directory. If, say, your images were at http://www.ispdomain.suffix/mywebsite/images/, you would not be able to access any of the images. If they were at http://www.ispdomain.suffix/mywebsite/html/images/ you would be able to.
The second point to remeber is that if your URL is forwarding to an actual filename, e.g. http://www.ispdomain.suffix/mywebsite/html/index.html, URL masking will work, but you will not be able to access any other files from your real site. The reason for this is that entering http://www.mydomain.suffix/images/ would be the same as entering:
http://www.ispdomain.suffix/mysite/html/index.html/images/
Also, it is possible that cookies will not function correctly if you use them on your website.
If you are unsure of the above points, or if you're not sure whether your site will work, you should email us before ordering URL masking.
What if I wish to cancel an order and do I get a refund?
Once a domain name has been registered for you we will be happy to delete it for you with the appropriate Registry but note that no refunds can be made. Please therefore make sure you want the names you have selected before you submit your order.
Can I sell or transfer my domain to someone else?
Yes you can provided you follow the procedures as required by each of the Registries.
In the case of .uk names this is a fairly straightforward process - simply fill and return the certificate if you have one or fax Nominet UK on 01865 332299 on letter-headed paper and notify them of your wish to transfer the name on to another person or company. For international names please contact us.
I keep getting an error saying 'this site requires cookies'. What does this mean?
We use browser cookies to keep track of orders on our website. When you first visit, you are assigned a unique number which your browser sends back to us every time you visit one of our pages. This tells us who's connecting and allows us to send the correct order information back to you (to confirm your currently selected domains, etc.)
We do understand that some people disallow cookies for security or privacy reasons. Regarding your privacy, it is our policy never to use the cookies you send back for tracking you, or compiling statistics. We do log cookie information, but this only be used for fixing cookie or order-related problems and tracking abuse of our system We will never be passed on cookie information to a third party.
Our cookies are set to be deleted by your browser when you close it (assuming your browser supports this - we don't set a date, and this causes most browsers to forget the cookie when they are closed), so no tracking can ever be done between sessions (i.e. if you close your browser and later come back to our site, you are assigned a new cookie). This guarantees you anonymity, as you can just close and re-open your browser, and you will be assigned a new cookie. This also means that your browser cache won't be cluttered up with pointless cookies for the next 10 years. The downside to this is that if you do close your browser before submitting your order, you will have to re-select any domains when you return to our site. You can leave our site and come back later, and your order will be carried across provided you do not close your browser or clear your cache.
If you enable cookies and still see the error, please carry out the following steps:
- First, make sure that you have visited the front of our site - http://www.just-the-name.co.uk/ - since your browser was last opened.
- Visit this page. This page contains all of the information which your browser passed back to our server, including cookie information.
- Copy the information on the page, and paste into an email. You should include all of this information, as this information allows us to find entries for your visit to our site in our logs.
- Supply a brief description in the email, explaining the problem you were having (e.g. you were seeing an error saying that cookies are required when you try to visit our site), anything you did to try and enable cookies in your browser (e.g. following one of the links above, and following the instructions), and any other information you believe may be of use.
- Send the email to support@just-the-name.co.uk.
With this information, we should be able to help you solve the problem.
Can I transfer my existing domain name to you?
You can transfer any .uk or International domain into our system. For details of how to transfer domains to us, please see below.
I want to transfer a domain to your system from another hosting provider. How do I do this?
We provide the ability to transfer any .uk or International domains to our system, in a similar method to registration of new domains. To transfer the domain, you should do the following:
You should first check that the company your domain is currently hosted with will allow your domain to be transferred. You should also check if there are any transfer fees charged by your current hosting company to move the domain away from them.
Once you have verified that you are able to transfer the domain away from your current provider, you should visit our main website, and search for your domain. The domain should appear as registered, and offer you a link entitled 'Transfer'. Click this link and follow the on screen instructions. You'll need to ask the domain's current registrant to unlock the domain and if you're the admin contact then you'll also need to ask for an EPP (transfer) code.
Once your transfer request has been completed, and you have submitted your order, you should contact the company currently holding your domain, and request that they transfer the domain to our ips-key - 'GETSURFED' (in the case of .uk domains) or request that the administrative contact for the domain (most likely your current hosting company) accept a transfer request for the domain.
Until the domain has been transferred to our ips-key, we have no control of the domain. Once the change has been made, we are able to transfer the domain to our servers, and configure the settings for the domain.
The fee we charge for domain transfer covers the transfer, and all other facilities on our servers until the domain is due for renewal.
Why do you charge more for International domain transfers than you do for .uk domain transfer?
The reason for this is that transferring an International domain to us also increases the registration period by one year. This means that if you registered your domain name one year ago, and the domain is due to expire in one years time, when you transfer the domain to us, the expiry period will be lengthened to two years time.
Do you have any facility for configuring DNS settings for my domain?
Yes, by changing DNS settings, you can re-route mail or web connections through a server which is configured to respond to requests for your domain.
Specifically, we allow you to make changes to A records, CNAME records, and MX records on your domains. There is currently a limit of 10 MX records, and 10 A / CNAME records.
Please note: DNS changes should only be made if you are sure of what you are doing. With our system, if you have any problems, there is an option to reset the DNS settings to the default, which will fix any problems which may be occuring, but there is an inherent latency for DNS changes, which can be anything up to 24 hours. This means that if you make any changes (including resetting to defaults) it may take up to 24 hours before the changes are visible world-wide.
Do you insert any advertising into my emails or web site?
When your order is completed, your website address will initially point to our holding page. This page may containg a banner advert for us. However, the moment you change your web forwarding to point to your website, this banner will no longer be displayed, and no other advertising will be displayed by us.
To see our current holding page, which is the page which will be initially displayed on your site, click here.
We will never add any advertising to emails which go through our mail servers.
What do I do if I've lost my password ?
Your login details can be sent to you, but only to the e-mail address from which you originally ordered the domain (for obvious security reasons). Click here if you would like your details mailed to you. If you are not still using the same email account, please send a request for your login details to our support department, and please include as many details as you can for verification purposes (eg: original email address).
